Based in Pretoria, South Africa, Ideco is Africa’s leading supplier of next-generation, human biometrics with scalable solutions that empower business owners to circumvent transgressions. In a sector that constantly changes and continuously evolves, Ideco and its partners have successfully deployed a multitude of biometric readers for a wide range of businesses; transforming everyday transactions into trusted transactions. As a result, millions of people authentically transact on a daily basis in a variety of security-conscious environments.

Business Challenge

From the attempt to prevent money laundering, to making sure only the right people are in the right place at the right time (and especially if the wrong people are in the wrong place), Ideco manufactures a verification product that will promptly confirm the identity of individuals on the spot using a variety of biometric identification points, such as fingerprints, palm vein structures, or facial and voice recognition in order to create a single identity profile that can be securely stored and accessed when needed.

Ideco was looking to create a new, highly integrated verification solution that combined all human biometric technologies into a single, compact and portable system to reduce the footprint of previous products that required multiple, bulky carrying cases. The goal to increase the ease of use for their customers with a system most often used in the one-on-one enrollment and identification process. An additional challenge was to take the complexity out of the equation by making the product configurable and far simpler to use – all while the biometric data needed to be communicated instantaneously in a highly secure environment, protecting the privacy of the person being profiled, but also in delivering it to the necessary authorities.

Solution

The need to combine a number of different applications into a compact and fully integrated system led Ideco, after an extensive online search, to Digi – specifically to the Digi ConnectCore® 6 due to its high connectivity and ability to drive multiple displays. Digi ConnectCore 6 is based on a quad-core Cortex-A9 processor with a truly future-proof platform solution with scalable performance and pre-certified wireless 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity. With this new level of connectivity, Ideco can give their customers a single, portable multifunctional unit capable of handling all the various biometric measurements, process real-time data, securely maintain the database via Wi-Fi or cellular network, and power two touchscreens and a small printer.

Beyond the technological superiority of Digi products, the assistance Ideco received was unparalleled. “In addition to all the technical benefits of the Digi ConnectCore 6, the support we’ve received from Digi was absolutely superb. They were able to custom-develop critical components that are helping us get to market faster. In fact, we already have orders from customers!” said Marius Coetzee, CEO of Ideco Bio Metrics.

Results

Ideco was able to accelerate product development and focus on their intellectual property, creating a rugged, reliable, and secure solution that can work in a wide variety of industries for a range of identification applications. From border control and airport security, to mining customers who need to identify individuals before they go into high risk areas and keep a record of who is actually down in the mine, Ideco systems are building the profiles and instantly confirming the identities of individuals. In the financial industry for fingerprinting those opening new bank accounts, or using facial recognition for people entering government printing works, Ideco is making sure the right people with the right clearances are in the right place at the right time.
